According to several reports, Mitt will be making a speech this Thursday explaining his Mormonism. I will pay attention to this speech since there are a few interesting aspects of the Mormon religion that I look forward to seeing if Mitt will address. There are arguments for and against making this speech, but that isn't what I find to be the most significant part of this speech.
This tells me that Mitt has decided that his candidacy is on the brink and so it is necessary to bring this issue up before the first votes happen. He has recently lost his lead in Iowa to Huck. There are diverging opinions in New Hampshire on what is going on there. It looks like Mitt is trying to stop the bleeding in his key states. (I repeat a prediction that I made weeks ago: I think it is very possible that Mitt wins NEITHER Iowa or New Hampshire).
One part that is very curious to me: the Mormon Speech will take place at the Bush Presidential Library with George W. Bush introducing him. This is not an endorsement, but Mitt is opting to be very close to Bush on this issue. This seems to be a calculated risk to me. Bush has always had a fairly strong evangelical support, so Mitt is trying to attach himself to him regarding the religion issue. The problem is that Bush has such poor support, even from within the Republican party, that the connection between the two will be seen as a negative.
