The
Miami Herald is reporting that Huckabee took a shot at Fred on his Social Conservative credentials implying that he has changed his position:
Without mentioning Thompson's name, Huckabee told a crowd of about 100 here that a rival appeared on a news program Sunday and distanced himself from proposed constitutional amendments that would ban abortion and gay marriage, both cherished goals of many social conservatives.
Here is the only problem with what Huck says: Fred has NEVER gotten close to either of these amendments. Fred's Federalist position has been very consistent that these are state issues rather than Federal issues.
Huckabee responded sharply Thursday, saying, "You cannot say it's a moral decision, but morality differs within each of the states. ... You can't say I'm pro-life philosophically, then say it's up to the states."
Well, yes you can. Not all moral decisions are made at the Federal level. In fact, most are not. In discussion on this topics, people forget that things like murder, rape, armed robery, etc. are all state crimes. They are not federal crimes (except in certain circumstances). So if murder is not federal, why should abortion? Many people against abortion (which I am as well) want it battled at the federal level because they can defeat abortion everywhere in one shot. But that doesn't make it the way that our government was set up.
